HowCork is PETA Approved Vegan!

A few months back, HowCork received the PETA Approved Vegan label for all of the products sold on our website! We were really excited to receive this certification from PETA and to connect with PETA personally.

So, I wanted to take a minute to explain what the PETA Approved Vegan label means, and talk a little bit about why we love and support PETA.

What is the PETA Approved Vegan logo?

PETA states that the PETA Approved Vegan logo was created "to help shoppers find animal-free products at a glance, and make purchases that align with their values." This logo can be used by companies that sell apparel, accessories, furniture, or home decor items, in order to make it clear for customers to see which products they sell are suitable for vegans. This logo can be used by companies who apply for the logo with PETA. In order to complete the process, you must complete PETA's two questionnaires where you fully inform them of the materials used to make your products, and you make a statement (under penalty of law if misrepresented) that your products are entirely vegan. Then, you are contacted by a PETA employee who works with you to ask any further questions before deciding whether to approve your application.

In our case, as we are a company that sells only vegan products, we are given permission to display the logo anywhere that we would like, for example, in our store's promotional material, on our website, social media, and on store signs for in-person venues. Otherwise, if all products sold in a store are not entirely vegan, the store can only display the logo on particular product pages and product tags. This ability to place the PETA Approved Vegan logo front and center on our website is meant to give customers even more assurance that they can trust that when shopping in our store, they need not ever doubt that all of our products are 100% vegan and no animals were harmed to create the products we sell.

What's even better is that we are far from alone! More than 1,000 other companies are using the PETA Approved Vegan logo, which makes it much easier for all of us to shop for vegan and cruelty-free products of all types. I encourage you to check out their list of all the ethical companies using the PETA Approved Vegan logo!

Why We Love Everything PETA Does and Stands For

PETA stands for "People for the ethical treatment of animals." Their slogan states "Animals are not ours - to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way." We couldn't agree more with this sentiment. In fact, we chose to create a cork marketplace to take a stand against the popularity and ever-increasing market for animal leather. Cork is everything that animal leather is and more in terms of its material characteristics, and upon seeing the destruction caused by leather production, we knew that we wanted to help make cork a primary contender against animal leather for the fashion accessories of future generations.

PETA has actually been protesting for animal rights since 1980 when the organization was founded. PETA believes strongly that animals deserve rights and "equal consideration," or in other words, that animals deserve to live their lives without being exploited or harmed. PETA believes that it is a creature's capacity to suffer that determines whether it should be protected from acts that would cause suffering upon it. Rather than determining the rights endowed to any creature on the criteria of "can it talk" or "can it reason," as PETA quotes Jeremy Bentham, a moral philosopher, the question they ask is simply "can it suffer?" Based on this thinking, PETA believes that if animals can feel pain and suffering, as well as pleasure and happiness, that animals have the right to be protected from having pain inflicted upon them. They are sentient beings and deserve to be treated with respect.

PETA continues to explain that in their view, animals have inherent worth, that is, that their value is not derived from or based solely on their usefulness to humans. PETA believes that if an animal has the will to live and does not want to be harmed, that it is their right to be protected from said harm. In the words of PETA's founder Ingrid Newkirk, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. Each one values his or her life and fights the knife.”

We wholeheartedly agree with PETA's views, and we are thrilled to be playing a small part to help promote the vision for a world free from animal cruelty. Shopping vegan means that an animal's life is more important than a pretty leather bag or jacket. It respects all animals as living beings, with the ability to feel. Animals are highly developed creatures just like humans, with a complex central nervous system. They have the right to exist just the same as we do, without being exploited by humans.

So PETA, keep up the amazing work! We are honored to be able to use the PETA Approved Vegan logo, and we hope to do our part in promoting the same message of kindness and compassion towards all animals that PETA has been working into the public conscience for over thirty years.
